Insurance Company Underwriting Manager (General Insurance Business) Vacancy in Kenya
Our client a leading Insurance Company wishes to recruit a competent individual to fill the position of Underwriting Manager – General Insurance Business (GIB)
Primary Responsibility: Reporting to the General Manager (General Insurance Business), the primary responsibility will be to prepare and regularly review the underwriting strategies and operational plans in line with General Insurance Business objectives, ensure the department is adequately resourced with proper work processes, human resources and that the underwriting results reflect profitability in line with the company objectives.
Oversee the day to day efficient operation of underwriting departments in line with its core functions.
Provide leadership in formulation, execution and review of underwriting strategies
Prepare, circulate and regularly update underwriting guidelines on annual bases and ensure they are implemented
Ensure there is an effective process for proper documentation of risks, timely issuance of certificates, debits, renewal notices, policy documents and endorsements
Ensure that quotations are issued within the set timelines
Ensure efficient renewal process to achieve minimum lapse ratios, the set turnaround time for issuance of renewal notices. This includes ensuring that renewal terms are communicated and/or discussed with the banks, intermediaries and/or policyholders
Review the risks accepted in the company to ensure they are within the set underwriting guidelines / meet the expected quality standards, and covered under the reinsurance programme
Recommend risk surveys, communicate to the insured the recommendations and ensure incorporation of such risk improvement recommendations into policy warranties.
Ensures production budgets are communicated to the underwriting team, business transacted/closed captured in the books within the effective month and premium debits/credits dispatched to the policyholders and/or intermediaries as per set timelines
Ensure reconciliations are done within the set timelines to facilitate premium collection.
Continually review the business processes and recommends measures aimed at improving efficiency.
In liaison with the relevant officers ensure that there is structured training for the staff in the department, review of staff performance reviews and implementation of other staff policy issues.
Preparation of monthly strategy and operational reports of the Underwriting department for various stakeholders
Business Degree from a recognized university but preferably in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Economics,
Business Administration while an MBA will be added advantage.
Proficiency in use of computer applications
Professionally qualified – AIIK or ACII
In depth knowledge of Underwriting process, practices and emerging trends within the industry
Excellent leadership and management skills, a team player with excellent communication, analytical, negotiation and mediation skills
At least Six (6) years’ experience in General Insurance underwriting Four (4) of which should be at management level
