Monthly Gross Salary KES 290,000
The Africa Reproductive Health Initiative (AFRHI) works in the area of sexual and reproductive health for general population, Key Populations (KPs) and gender based violence and women economic empowerment and rights programs.
AFRHI works collaboratively with various institutions including governments, the public sector, national health research and extension systems, universities, International Research Systems and other stakeholders to implement research and training programs to empower women and young people.
Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) is a five year programme, whose objective is to generate an attitude of Zero Tolerance towards all forms of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and HIV and AIDS stigmatization.
VEP if funded by a consortium of five donors under the Gender Violence window and implemented by AFRHI over a five year period (2016-2021).
AFRHI is looking for a committed, well qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of Research and Special Project Officer, reporting to Deputy Programme Director.
Purpose of the position: The Research and Special Projects Officer will work with the Research team in conducting research in collaboration with various partners and putting in place a robust and sound research policy.
This position provides the opportunity to provide technical and operational support in various research collaborations with leading research institutions with high academic standards and within a cross-disciplinary focus, i.e. HIV, Gender Based Violence, Sexual Violence.
Responsibilities:
Research
  • Liaising with Principal Researchers;
  • Assist in formulation of research tools;
  • Assist in the identification of research methodologies;
  • Recruiting, training and supervising fieldworkers;
  • Ensuring that fieldworkers understand consent forms and that those forms are filled correctly;
  • Conduct weekly meetings with fieldworkers to address concerns / difficulties /  challenges in the fields;
  • Compiling and submitting weekly project progress report and planned activities;
  • Assist in the identification of research themes;
  • Assist with analysing collected data and compiling report.
Special Projects
  • Assist in developing projects budget plans;
  • Manage all aspects of the projects (Project implementation plan, projects budget, status reports and meetings);
  • Supervise projects teams;
  • Prepare for engagement reviews and quality assurance procedures;
  • Ensures projects documents are complete, current and stored appropriately;
  • Ensure projects are managed and completed within scope, time and budget;
  • Tracking and monitoring all activities within a project;
  • Reporting on the project deliverables to the Line Manager;
  • Compiling projects progress report for Funders;
  • Liaising with stakeholders of various projects;
  • Any other task allocated by Deputy Programme Director.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or studying towards a Masters or PhD in sociology / anthropology will be an added advantage; or
  • Any qualifications in the Social/Behavioral Sciences is acceptable.
Other Skills and Attributes:
  • A high standard of written English;
  • Ability to undertake and write a comprehensive literature review;
  • Oral presentations;
  • Ability to write a research proposal;
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork or experiments;
  • Relevant computer skills;
  • Project planning and management/evaluation and;
  • Administrative skills
